Evil

I am a small woman standing
on my small patch of kitchen floor

Broiling with rage as the radio maunders
through the war, lust and cruelty of the day.

Pulling a roast from the oven is not
the right response to such a litany of evil.

Many in this world are helpless.
How long will I wait to raise my free voice?

If I delay until the coffee is brewed
our sons and daughters, and theirs, too

Will consume innumerable horrors
Will we salute one another then with bon appetit?
