Two Poems by Jane Stuart
Songs
Autumn’s rain is cold;
cornstalks shiver in dry wind,
the plow stains with rust
The grasshopper leaps-
ants crawl out of under-holes,
snow is on the moon
Shimmering fireflies
glimmer in the meadow’s light;
night falls over time
Dropping silver moon
benches on a bed of clouds
in the star-filled sky
Slowly, an owl swoops
from his perch-a-wild bird calls,
the hawk stops his flight
Summer’s garden sleeps.
Vines cover the old rail fence
and the hoe is quiet.
Arabesques Of Golden Light
Tonight when the moon’s shadows sweep across
our meadows full of fireflies I will find
the peaceful hours summer promised me,
the joy of time in circles of gold light
bouncing through the wind, falling on grass
that waves in silver moonlight and soft rain,
the beauty of sleeping flowers, night’s dark hours
and tree-held shadows of rising mist.
When morning comes, the lightest of green leaves
will freshen in the growing summer light
and flowers will talk resplendently of time
that makes them beautiful and brings earth peace.
I dreamed of such a world of arabesques,
of golden swirls on breaths of wind.
