Three poems by Tamara L. Earley
I Can Almost Feel the Quiet
I can almost feel the quiet as I get up at dawn.
The gentle gray light spreads through the morning.
Birds are singing, rejoicing in the new day.
My dog stretches and sniffs the grass.
Some days she’s up and ready to chase anything that moves
But those bones of hers remind her of her age.
She’s and old dog.
White hair is slowly replacing the golden.
In her dreams she’s young
Chasing squirrels and rabbits again.
Her feet pretend to run
And she whimpers excitedly in her dreams of what she’s caught.
The radio goes off waking her from her dreams of dog paradise
She wakes to her old bones again
Poor Hamlet
Poor Hamlet
Such a wishy washy boy.
Mad at his step-dad
Upset with his mom.
He acts in strange ways
Wears black and leather boots.
Probably his hair is spiked
And a wire in his lip or two.
New Students
Where is Cab 211?
Laughing on the stairs.
Students streaming out of classrooms like the outgoing tide.
Gathering.
Judging each other.
Seeing but not seeing.
Nonchalantly coming late to class.
It’s not High School anymore!
Wise up.
Add cards…...last minute.
No notebook, no pen.
Cell-phones ringing.
Backpacks loaded.
What book to bring.
The beginning of wisdom.
Opening of eyes and ears.
Connecting, maybe.
Wising up? Maybe.
